5 Tips to Land A Dream Graphic Designing Job

Dream Graphic Designing Job

Everyone has a dream job, and some people are lucky enough to find it in high school or college. But what about those of us who graduated and still haven’t found the design job we’ve always wanted? The good news is that landing your dream graphic design job can be done! The first step to finding your perfect design position is by following these five tips to help you land your dream graphic designing job.

1) Create your portfolio

Whether you’re looking for your first design job or aiming to be a professional graphic designer, it’s important that you have a portfolio. A portfolio is your calling card—the one thing that has all of your best work in one place and showcases your skills and style. It can help you find work and advance your career—and it’s something many hiring managers will expect from prospective employees. If you don’t already have a portfolio, now is a great time to start building one. Start with just three pieces of work that are your strongest examples; then add more as you go along. The goal is to make sure every piece you include shows off your strengths and style. Make sure everything looks professional, polished, and cohesive—and that each piece tells a story about who you are as an artist.
The most common mistake people make when creating their portfolios: Not having enough work in their portfolios! Many people mistakenly believe they need hundreds of pieces before they even begin to create a portfolio—but actually, less is more here.

2) Have an eye for detail

Great graphic designers are detail-oriented. They can notice when a typeface is slightly off, or when a logo isn’t quite balanced correctly. This eye for detail is what makes them great designers—and it’s also what gets them jobs in the first place. When you have an eye for detail, clients will notice, too. When you’re reviewing their designs and pointing out mistakes that others wouldn’t even see, they know you truly care about their vision. And, as any designer knows, details matter! 3) Believe in yourself

The first thing that you need to believe if you want to become a graphic designer is that you can be one. The odds may seem against you as competition for jobs is fierce, but it’s really all about going after what you want and believing in yourself. So make sure that your portfolio is up-to-date, apply for jobs, and don’t give up. Persistence will get you where you want to be; sooner than later, those dreams of working in design will become a reality. Write an e-book: As you start making more money from freelance work, think about writing an e-book based on some of your skills or something related to graphic designing. E-books are easy to write, inexpensive to produce, and quick to market online—you could even sell them through your own website or online marketplaces like Amazon or Apple iBooks. You could also offer them as bonuses when someone hires you for a project.

4) Practice makes perfect

Try as much as possible to get your hands on as many graphic design jobs as you can, no matter how small. This will help you become a better designer and build a portfolio that truly speaks for itself. It also helps if you start working on your portfolio while you’re still in school and work towards submitting it when you graduate so employers know what kind of caliber they’re getting when they hire you. Freelancing is also a great way to build up your experience without having to worry about full-time employment. If you have good skills, word gets around quickly and you might be surprised at how easy it is to land some freelance gigs—which are great because they give you some breathing room between jobs but don’t tie you down too long-term like a full-time job would.

5) Be unique

Being a graphic designer is all about having your own style and being creative. If you really want to stand out as a freelancer, or if you’re going after an in-house design job, try doing something unusual with your portfolio—something that shows off a unique take on graphic design. If your passion is typography or logo design, find some great online resources for inspiration. Create a professional-looking website that showcases examples of your work. Or, even better, create a Tumblr or Pinterest account dedicated to your work. There are tons of tools available to help you get started. And remember: no matter what you do, be sure it looks professional and polished!
